Health Targets
For optimal healthcare, the following metabolic targets should be aimed for:
Body Mass Index (BMI) = Weight in kg/(height in metres)2: 18.5 to 25
Blood Pressure: Less than 130/80 mmHg
Fasting Blood Sugar: Less than 100 mg/dL (for non-diabetics); Less than 120 mg/dL (for diabetics)
Postprandial Blood Sugar (2 Hrs after breakfast or lunch): Less than 140 mg/dL (for non-diabetics); Less than 180 mg/dL (for diabetics)
HbA1c: Less than 6% (for non-diabetics); Less than 7% (for diabetics).
LDL cholesterol:
Less than 130 mg/dL (for non-diabetics and those without significant cardiovascular risk);
Less than 100 mg/dL (for diabetics and those with other cardiovascular risks)
Less than 70 mg/dL (for those with established coronary or other atherosclerotic disease)
HDL cholesterol:
More than 40 mg/dL
Triglycerides:
Less than 150 mg/dL
Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH): 0.3 to 4.2 microIU/mL
Haemoglobin: 12 to 16 g/dL (for women); 13 to 18 mg/dL (for men)
Uric acid: Less than 6.2 mg/dL (for women): Less than 7 mg/dL (for men)
Daily aerobic exercise (e.g. brisk walking): 30 to 60 minutes
