In the past, we used to take the health of our body for granted until a disease makes its appearance. When diseases occur, the focus would be on the agent (germ) that has attacked and invaded our previously healthy body. The task that the doctor faces was similar to that of a detective hunting down a culprit. Once the disease is identified, treatment will be aimed at attacking and destroying the culprit – the germ.
Now, this simplistic view of health and disease has given way to a different paradigm. Even in our youth, our bodies are constantly becoming unhealthy and with every passing year, various imbalances set in as part of the aging process and these give rise to symptoms. There are multiple chemical and physical parameters that combine together to make up a harmoniously functioning human body and it requires hard work and diligence to maintain health when faced with multiple destabilizing influences from diet, lifestyle, work and environment.
The imbalances that make up disease have to be constantly monitored and attempts should be constantly made to correct them and restore the balance of the healthy human body.
The essential parameters that we are able to measure that have a bearing on health include weight, waist circumference, blood sugar, lipid profile, liver transaminase enzymes, urea, creatinine, uric acid, electrolytes, thyroid related hormones, haemoglobin and blood counts.
To maintain health, it is important to have continuous knowledge of how close to disease we are in terms of these parameters and to take measures to bring them closer to healthy norms. This means we have to measure the imbalances that are there in the majority of us periodically and an up to date record should be maintained of all these parameters.
The attempts to restore the values to healthy norms must be aided by appropriate target values of each parameter and it is important that the awareness of the target values must be part of the general knowledge that everyone in society would be expected to acquire. Not only should there be awareness of the targets, but lifestyle and simple therapeutic measures involved in primary, preventive healthcare should also be part of our education.
The Personal Health Record offers a means to maintain a readily accessible repository of your health related information as well to inform of target values of each parameter. It paves the way for a process of healthcare that is based on continuous monitoring of all essential parameters and on maintaining each parameter within its target range.
Thus health assessment becomes not a matter of looking for the symptom-causing disease, but one of continuous surveillance of all essential parameters in an attempt to detect imbalances early so that corrective measures can be implemented before complications and irreversibility set in. This is what our organization is aiming to do with the help of the internet-based personal health records.
A Personal Health Record or PHR is typically a health record that is initiated and maintained by an individual.
Internet-based PHRs
Also referred to as Patient Portals, Internet-based PHRs allow health information to be accessed and edited via a Web browser. The data is stored on a remote server. Internet-based PHRs may have the capability to print information, backup data, import data from other information systems, and share information with health care providers.
They have the advantage of being accessible from any location with an Internet connection with a suitable Web browser. By using the internet, the PHR is enabled to be interactive, and to evolve with medical literature and the medical history of the patient and his or her family.

Physician-assisted PHR
In this, the value of the PHR is bolstered by professional supervision and editing done by doctors and include comments on diagnosis and management, personalized lifestyle advice and so on. Its purpose is to implement continuous healthcare through encouraging lifestyle modification and therapeutic intervention at a primary preventative level based on a comprehensively maintained and readily accessed internet-based personal health record.
This PHR is not just a repository of your health data. Additionally, we offer:
- Clinically intelligent test scheduling
We work out and publish the dates on which future tests are needed (calculated from monitoring intervals assigned by the doctor based on existing health conditions, age, gender and so on) - Establishment of continuity of care by enforcing compliance with the Test Schedule with the help of timely email / SMS reminders.
- Healthcare enhancement through freely encouraged email interactivity between doctor and patient. Whenever a member enters test results, our doctor is automatically alerted, who then makes changes to the monitoring/ treatment strategy as required. The system facilitates members, doctors and the PHR managers to interact freely through email, thus enhancing the quality of care.
- Expertly written client education material on health topics specific to the conditions of the client in question.
- The optional service of Personal Health Record Managers who can enter test results on your behalf in your PHR, scan and upload your X-rays and ECGs, remind you when tests are approaching or are overdue, encourage you to comply with your Test schedule, help fix appointments with doctors and be a ready source of information and help on all your health related issues
Personal Health Records are a reality because of the growth and development of Information and Communication Technology in the past few years.
For the first time, individuals have the power to access, own, organize and maintain in an up-to-date condition all their medical information - that has been in the past scattered in various places - including the records of hospitals, clinics and laboratories they have visited, in degenerating pieces of paper, in their 'heads' as well as in the 'heads' of their healthcare providers.
Watch My Health originated in an attempt to overcome the difficulties doctors face in obtaining critical information about the patient's background medical condition in the event of unforeseen and abrupt needs for the same that might arise anywhere, anytime. Often medical care is less than optimal because the doctor who sees an individual for the first time may not be fully informed of his existing health conditions and risk factors, current medications, allergies, sensitivities and so on.
WMH is now able to provide this information to any doctor through a continuously updated PHR readily accessed online.
We hope that, in future, the Personal Health Record will become an essential document for every citizen - a 'passport' to optimal and economical healthcare. All healthcare providers would be relying on the PHR as the patient's primary health database and the information generated in hospitals and in specialty clinics would be channeled and assimilated into the PHRs and would thus be accessible to the authorized personnel who need them.
More than a source of information, we anticipate that PHRs would, in future, become the hub around which the entire healthcare system will be organized - the inbuilt programmes within the PHR system guiding and establishing standards and uniformity of preventive and chronic healthcare.
Fee for Creation of your online PHR that involves digitization of all your current and old paper-based clinical laboratory and image data and uploading them into your personal account at watchmyhealth.com. This is carried out by trained PHR managers under direct supervision of doctors at WMH.
