What is a PHR?

A Personal Health Record or PHR is typically a health record that is initiated and maintained by an individual.

Internet-based PHRs

Also referred to as Patient Portals, Internet-based PHRs allow health information to be accessed and edited via a Web browser. The data is stored on a remote server. Internet-based PHRs may have the capability to print information, backup data, import data from other information systems, and share information with health care providers.

They have the advantage of being accessible from any location with an Internet connection with a suitable Web browser. By using the internet, the PHR is enabled to be interactive, and to evolve with medical literature and the medical history of the patient and his or her family.

Physician-assisted PHR

In this, the value of the PHR is bolstered by professional supervision and editing done by doctors and include comments on diagnosis and management, personalized lifestyle advice and so on. Its purpose is to implement continuous healthcare through encouraging lifestyle modification and therapeutic intervention at a primary preventative level based on a comprehensively maintained and readily accessed internet-based personal health record.
